What Does a Caregiver Do?

A caregiver is a very important part of the society. We almost in various ways, are related with the caregivers, in our family when some one suffers from serious diseases and she or he cannot do work of his or her own, we hire a caregiver. A caregiver helps him/her to change dress, toileting, bathing, feeding, caregiver also gives him medicines, keeps records, watches vital symptoms.


Classification of Caregiver Duties


A caregiver works normally in four ways. Some times she takes personal care, or does house hold duties, gives companionship to the ailing patient. Again some times she works when the regular healthcare person takes leave or does not come for any reason she does work in her place.


Nature of Caregiver Duties


As per the duty, we can divide the caregiver into primary and secondary levels. The primary level caregivers does the basic duties, they change the clothes, dresses, helps in bathing, shaving, feeding and toileting. Again caregiver gives the patients companionship by chatting with him or her, which makes the patient feel relaxed. A caregiver some times works as personal care aide, when she works for house hold, she makes meal, goes for shopping, washing clothes or laundry work. A caregiver helps the patient to attend the physician by driving car.


Skills Needed to Be a Caregiver


A caregiver must have some skills which she can put through her caregiver resume for selecting in any setup.

  • She must be stout, and be able to lift a mass up to a certain height.
  • She must have the ability to push and pull at a greater magnitude as when she will look after a patient she will need to do that.
  • She must have the fluency in speaking with some different clients in English.
  • She must acquire minimum education.

Responsibilities of Caregiver


A caregiver should have some responsibilities during her working field.

  • She should help the clients or the patients with his/her activities that she or he does for living.
  • Caregiver has to be very careful and conscious about personal care with hygiene about eating habit, food item and the environment the patient is taking food.
  • While working a caregiver must be careful about protecting the property of the owner.
  • As most of the cases, it is seen the patient cannot move freely at his own, so the caregiver has to arrange wheel chair in proper way.
  • During the process of caring, any troublesome situation may happen a caregiver must be alert for that if required she will have to call the physician and if the patient is a chronic patient the emergency medicines have to be kept nearby.
  • When a caregiver works as a personal caregiver, then she has to do some other things, she needs to do washing cloths, shopping.
  • A caregiver’s foremost work is to record and note down the vital signs and changes before or after the medication, if happens she has to inform that to the physician.
